Admiral Sir Angus Edward Malise Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore and Ardoch (1893-1981), 20th Laird, had a long and distinguished naval career which spanned both World Wars. He commanded a gun turret at the Battle of Jutland in 1916, and held four commands during World War II.

He held the positions of Flag Officer, Scotland (1950-51), Lord Lieutenant of Dumbartonshire (1955-1968) and Keeper of Dumbarton Castle (1955-1981).

Following the death of his uncle, Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham, in 1936, he extended Ardoch House considerably.
